INTRODUCTION
1.1 COLOR MAPPED IMAGES
True color digital display specifies color information on the screen
with 8 bits for each of the primary components such as red, green, and blue
comprising 24 bits per pixel. Raw image representations usually require a
large amount of storage space and proportionally longer transmission delays
in the case of file uploads or downloads. An alternative for most common
monitors is to provide 8 bits to specify the color of each pixel, which means
that only 256 colors can be displayed simultaneously. In order to reach many
customers, highly compressed palletized images are needed in applications
such as game cartridges, geographic information systems, online training,
simple animations, and the World Wide Web.
