Book Overview

C By Example is designed to make programming easy to learn for the beginning programmer. It builds the reader's programming skills by using clear, easy-to-understand exercises. Hands-on, real world examples show readers how to write programs that flow correctly and produce accurate results. At the end of the book, readers will use the concepts they learned in the book to build a blackjack game. It also includes an appendix that discusses where...

If you have never been exposed to C, this is the book

This is an excellent book for beginners. I am fluent in Visual Basic but I had never been exposed to C. Suddenly I find myself needing to develop DLLs in C. I was scared to death because of the short time I had to catch up. I did not think C was that easy to understand until I started reading this book. Even if your previous knowledge on programming is very poor, this book will take you step by step so that you will be soon programming. The style in which it is written is very clear and simple, with very good down-to-earth explanations. The examples are very simple, they just show the concepts and are far from being a technical challenge, but they serve their purpose well. Mistakes: there may be a few, but nothing that can drive you lost (at least to me). However, it does not say much about using a compiler and if you are looking for advanced topics this is not the book, but, in this regard, the editor is very honest: at the back cover you can read it is for beginning to intermediate level users. I am ready to jump into the advanced texts. Thanks Mr. Perry.

Superb Book

Firstly I shall explain a little about myself,I wanted to use embedded microcontrollers and started off by learning assembly language, soon I found it wasnt powerfull/flexable enough for what I needed, so C was the way I was told to go.After some weeks of looking through books, I found this one..I did my usual trick of reading the first chapter, and for the first time since my quest for a C book I understood it! Im a hardware guy by trade/way of thinking and many programming books simply Confused me.Haveing worked through the book, I found it easy to read and very helpfull. At times it may seem a little 'chatty' but to be honest this is one of the things that keeps the book easy to read!I taught myself C from this book in about 6 months, its so easy to get something basic like a 'hello world' program up and running in about an hour, and its VERY satisfying to see..Its a superb beginners book, but as for reference its ok, but not as good as the K & R white book.. If you want to teach yourself C and you know NOTHING about C , This is the book for you... if you already know C and want a reference book, you wont like this book...

Great for Beginners

This book should be the textbook for Beginning Computer Programming.I am a relative beginner to programming. In the past, I have found programming tutorial books to be absolutely boring because they lacked examples. This book is ALL examples. It is a very good way to teach the language because at every stage of the learning process, I am forced to take an active role in the learning process. I am halfway through the book and I have already typed in about 20 mini-programs that have progressively become harder and more complex. The result is that I am naturally becoming comfortable with the C computer environment.

Great book, well worth buying!

C is by no means a friendly language,in fact it is even more of a hostile, curmudgeonly language than good old FORTRAN IV. C is an entree to more modern languages such as C++, JavaScript and (to some extent at least) Java. It also sounds impressive down at the pub if you can program in C. I can't say that all Perry's book are great, but most of them are, and Greg really gets into stride with this one. Clear, comprehensive, friendly and fun and a wonderful intro to 'heavies' such as Kelley and Pohl's A Book on C. Buy C by Example, spend a rainy weekend or two with it and learn C!

Excellent; very easy to understand

The easiest book to read and understand of any programming language I have read.
