Hickok confesses to Dave, "For the last couple of weeks I been sensing the future and I don't think I'm riding out of this gulch alive. That feelings been growing stronger every day. I want to get the right version of my story down while I still have breath left in my body."With that Hickok narrates his story. Not only is it his story it's the ingredients that go into a sweeping narration of the entire westward movement. We get to encounter Custer, Buffalo Bill, John Wesley Hardin, Ben Thompson, Jesse James, Calamity Jane, Texas Jack, just to name a few of the people you'll meet. You'll be there at the gunfights in the toughest cow towns in the West that made Hickok a household word and the pattern for almost every movie cowboy to follow. While writing Hickok's story Dave is immersed in the lives and happenings of 1876 Deadwood. He discovers the crooks, cheaters and ways they mine the miners. He also finds out some tricks that in one day teach him to appear to draw and shoot almost as well as Hickok himself for Wild Bill's shooting demonstration. Finally, before Dave can leave town he must go up against a proven killer in a shoot out. The only thing Dave has going for him is Hickok's gun, and that may not be enough.
