Children's and young adult novels about challenging topics are the specialty of bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson. Born Laure Beth Halse in Potsdam, New York in 1961, she spent her senior year in high school as an exchange student, living on a pig farm in Denmark. She returned to Northern New York, got her associate degree at Onondaga Community College and then her B.A. at Georgetown University in languages and linguistics. While Anderson was working as a freelance journalist, she began writing novels and non-fiction books. She first gained attention for her novel Speak published in 1999. The winner of numerous awards, Speak was adapted into a film starring Kristen Stewart. Along with other honors, Anderson received the Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 2009 for her contribution to young adult literature. She lives in Northern New York.
