Although Frank Herbert wrote short stories, he found his greatest commercial and critical success with his science fiction novels, especially the Dune saga. Dune, his signature work, is one of the bestselling science fiction novels ever and winner of the Nebula Award. It was made into a film directed by David Lynch and produced as an Emmy-Award-winning mini-series on the Sci-Fi Channel. Born Franklin Patrick Herbert, Jr. in 1920 in Tacoma, Washington, he lied about his age to secure his first job at a newspaper. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees for six months as a photographer. Following his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Washington. Leaving the University without graduating, he worked at a number of newspapers including the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, the Seattle Star, and the San Francisco Examiner. By 1972, Herbert was able to devote himself full-time to writing. He died in 1986.
