A New Favorite Book

Part of what drew me into this book was the back. Unlike other books which go off about how she was being tricked but she was drawn in by his charm and etc etc, this book just tells about how she's mistaken as another man's mistress and acts like one to uncover a plot that's going on. Marlene's mother and Paolo Rossi had been lovers. His wife hadn't liked him but refused to divorce him so their son Paul was illegitimate. Marlene's mother, also named Marlene had died only two years before and now Paolo was dead also, leaving a will behind. In that will he'd left a villa in Italy for his son, on the terms that he could only inherit if he spent two months out of every year there for the next five years. Marlene was now the legal guardian of Paul and she'd promised Paolo that she would take Paul to Italy every year so he could know his heritage. Marlene, from her mother, had inherited 25% of the stocks in Paolo's company and she'd promised Paolo that she would figure out who was trying to wreck his good name and destroy the company. Even though Marlene is currently working an herb garden that has been in the family for ages, she is actually a successful college graduate, owns her own business that has something to do with the stock market, and is a self-made millionaire. Her desires to hold off reading the particulars of the will come to a head when she's visited by Paolo's legitimate daughter and Rocco Andretti a family friend who is also representing the firm who is the Rossi's lawyers. Thinking she doesn't speak italian, they wind up revealing to her that they're actually there to get her to lose the inheritance of the villa, sell her stocks for a couple thousand, when they're worth way more, and even have her declared an unfit mother so she loses custody of Paul. Rocco even agrees with the plan to seduce her in order to get all this done. Marlene decides to go along with them and play dumb all the while she's figuring out who is smearing the Rossi name and waiting for the board meeting to show her cards. In the meantime, she winds up hooking up with Rocco, hoping that he has nothing to do with the plots going on, even though his actions seem to support that he does. This book was really good. Marlene was a strong character that even when she seems to lose her head over Rocco doesn't really. She could hold her own, but she wasn't without nerves. And even when she knew she could do something without any help, she still wanted support. She was an all around character that wasn't so extreme that you couldn't stand her. Rocco was a generally nice guy but still an idiot. It seems that he was crushing on her when he first saw her years before but she'd ignored him completely and wounded his ego. At that time her mother had just died and she was having dinner with Paolo, both upset. Even though you feel a little bad for him, you still want to punch him. The very very end was a little confusing. I couldn't decide if it was supposed to be a j

Nice Baird story

Rocco Andretti mistakenly believed that Marlene had been the late Paolo Rossi's mistress, and that she had borne Paolo a child. Rocco thought he could seduce Marlene into handing over everything Paolo had left to his son. Marlene had promised Paolo she would fight to make sure little Paul reveived his rightful inheritance. So it suited her to play up to Rocco's conviction that she was willing to warm the bed of any man who asked... for a while. She would string Rocco along only until she had proved he was double-dealing. This is a fav Baird.
