Very Good, By George!

George, a Harlequin Great Dane, knows what he want - he wants his owner Brad Rolston and Brad's son Justin to be happy again. They haven't been happy since Brad's wife Lynette ran off with his business partner Reggie Crenshaw who had gambled away quite a bit of Brad's money. George knows just the perfect woman for Brad - his favorite dog groomer, Kara Williams. But George has his work cut out for him - single mom to twins, Kara was dumped by her boyfriend when he found out she was pregnant and that, coupled with her mother's history of dating the wrong man, make Kara untrusting when it comes to relationships. But George isn't one to give up easily and will do everything he can to bring Brad and Kara together. Diane Salonen's "Love, By George" is a delightful fairy-tale like romance novel. It has some really cute elements - two adorable little girls, a teenage boy who is hurt by his parents divorce and acts out but is still very likeable, a lovable lunk of a dog, a couple of rabbits, a turtle, and even cats. Brad and Kara are both well-written characters. Brad is devastated by the betrayal of both his wife and business partner, but as the book goes on he begins to realize his flaws and works to become a better person. His relationship with Justin is also well done as he struggles to understand why his son has changed so much. Kara is a nicely complex character - dealing with being a single mother, trying to establish and maybe expand her business, living in a rundown apartment, and dealing with her loving but extremely flawed mother. The other characters are well-written especially Justin who is acting out in school because of his frustration over his parents' divorce. Kara's mother, Nan, is a complicated character who adds many dimensions to Kara's character as Nan's choices in men have shaped Kara's background and attitude on love and marriage. Kara's best friend, eighty-something Wilma Donning, is a voice of reason in the book, but has long kept secrets that have haunted her for years. And George the lovable Great Dane adds a lot of humor to the novel. The romance between Kara and Brad is more fairy tale than believable as everything falls far too neatly into place, but I love a good fairy tale now and then. For an extra bonus, you can check Debra Salonen's web page to find out what George was thinking during each chapter in the book. "Love, By George" is a very engaging romance novel.
