Counseling for diverse cultures

This book is long overdue, at last some cultural sensitivity to counseling and the issues around dealing with other world views. Pathology does have a cultural element, but not all perspectives are considered pathology. Being an individualist in an American society is a disability if you have no experience or sensitivity to persons who think in a collective way. For a Hispanic or Native American, the idea of the community has a deeper value to be considered as far as counseling is concerned. This book examines the cross sections of diversity and explores the limitation of counselors and the need for cultural education for counselors. I had to read this as a textbook, but I like the book. I think that is it certainly time to research these perspectives in order to become better counselors for the culturally diverse population at hand.

Accurate and informative depiction of Asian Americans

As an international Asian student majoring in Clinical Psychology, Sue's understanding of and advice for the Asian American clientele in relation to intrapsychic, interpsychic, and sociopolitical issues resonate accurately with my limited personal and clinical experiences. I read a library copy but ordered one for my future reference.

Sue and Sue’s third edition of "Counseling the Culturally Different" is an essential resource for all mental health practitioners. A required text in most multicultural counseling and therapy courses, this book illumines important sociopolitical and diversity issues related to the therapeutic process. The authors challenge counselors of all cultures to consider the impact that race and ethnicity can have on psychotherapy process and outcome. Readers may find themselves challenged as the authors unveil many of the ... pre-conceived notions that we as therapists hold, and ultimately bring to the counseling milieu.

Challenging enough to stimulate synthesis...........

This book is an outstanding text. It is often challenging for my Euro-American graduate students to read, yet it stimulates intense debate. I balance the presentation with speakers, other books, and group processing. This book is cogent, concise, and has a marvellously succinct history of the politics and development of the concepts of multicultural and diversity counseling. You may not prefer it, but you MUST read it to be current in this field
