Great story, good writer

This is a very good read. Very interesting story line. Great writer.

He’s a master of suspense! He’s a master of horror! He’s a master storyteller!

Like more than one other reviewer has mentioned, this was the first book I ever read by Dean Koontz. I found myself eager to read it after I saw the movie for the first time and found that I really liked it a lot. Considering I only expected a horror novel with a really smart, friendly dog as the hero, my expectations were exceeded to an extent that I can’t even begin to describe! Strong supernatural horror, excruciating suspense, unforgettable characters you come to love, partly because they are kind of extraordinary people, with hearts of gold, that we all strive to be, a twisted villain who is so vile and cruel that he is far more terrifying than the monster in the story, the monster itself, which is sympathetic, yet undeniably chillingly scary, in large part because of the savage murders it commits, plenty of warmth, romance, and laugh-out-loud humor, and excellent plotting that keeps you guessing. The dog, Einstein, is another one of this classic novel’s gifts; he is probably, easily, the best character in the entire story. In this book, he has serious competition for that title, however: Travis and Nora, the book’s human protagonists will steal your heart just as much as the dog. Something else worth mentioning: I’m so glad Dean Koontz made the dog a golden retriever. It’s no secret to me, a huge Koontz fan, any more than it is to any of his other fans, that Koontz loves golden retrievers. I know how he feels. These animals are beautiful. The few times I’ve met anyone who owns one has convinced me that their personalities makes them that much better: friendly, loving animals who sometimes remind me more of human beings than any other dog. I mentioned that Watchers is the first book I read by Dean Koontz. That’s not the only thing I have in common with with some of the other reviewers. I have also read the book more than once. I haven’t read it anywhere near as much as some, which surprises me. Because that’s the highest recommendation I can give for this wonderful book! Once you’ve read it, you’ll want to read it far more than once! While I’ve read many other books by Koontz that I find incomparable, there’s no doubt: Watchers is his masterpiece!

One of Mr. Koontz best books

Many years ago, this was the first Dean Koontz book I read; it was a gift from a friend. First thing I said was that I'm really not one of his fans and I was told you WILL like this. As I'm a dog/cat person, decided to give it a try. I fell in love with the main character as am sure any pet person will. I have several favorite books from this author since I've discovered Mr. Koontz. "Watchers", of course, along with "Dark Rivers of the Heart", also a pet inspired mystery book. I also enjoyed reading the "Jane Hawk" series, starting with "the Silent Corner" and the story continues with additional books. These are very hard to put down because you want to know what continues next. In a different realm is the book "Lightning" which is very different and very grabbing. I recommend these books to any Mr. Koontz fans, and also a good beginning for anyone who wants to discover what Mr. Koontz is all about.

Good book

This book took me awhile to pick back up when I put it down. When I did pick it up I enjoyed it but it just seemed too predictable.

My First Dean Koontz Read

This was the First Dean Koontz Book I read and still one of my favorites. I first read it about 15 years ago and I have been a Dean Koontz fan ever since.

A FIERY DISCOVERY ....

This book kept me on my feet and last breath.. read it over and over... sure over 20 times and still want to read it again.. I had a copy but when I left University I gave it to a friend as a token of luck.... It's a book I never stopped reading except daytime.. but the images in the the book stayed with me all day and could not wait for night to come... the only way I found connection with it was reading it at night... every detail became very alive infront of my eyes.. I felt like and still feel like I belonged in that world... I have read many books but this one is one of the masterpieces that captured my heart...it became part of me.. the plot is brilliantly set out and the unfolding of events kept on moving.. there was no moment of missing a clue.. the mystery, the thriller, the suspense, the relationship of characters just became a real world that we all live in.... it was as if, if I had to walk out of that door, then I will be engulfed in that world... this has been a fiery discovery of Mr. Dean Koontz's works. I have recommended the book to both my life partner and friends.... read it.. you will never be disappointed.... it's great!!!! Tebby W.T. Ramasike, (South Africa). xxx

Vintage Koontz

In WATCHERS, Dean Koontz weaves some of his most powerful, recurring themes into a story so compelling it demands to be read again--and again! Dangerous government experiments run amok; characters tortured by terrible childhoods and fears of losing those they love most; and the redemptive power of love and hope. These themes serve to give this novel an emotional punch that few thrillers can match these days.Perhaps Koontz's greatest accomplishment with this novel is that the story succeeds on so many levels. Readers who appreciate finely-tuned phrases and scalpel-clean, lyrical prose can delight in the prowess of a master wordsmith. Other readers, seeking only a story that delivers an entertaining plot, will be riveted by the twists and turns and "Oh, My God" moments that this story delivers. Lastly, those readers who have followed Koontz's career for many years can read WATCHERS simply to appreciate the spectacular progression of this author's skill. I've read WATCHERS many times, and every time, I pick up a technique that I can apply to my own suspense novels. Needless to say, this book has gained the "must read, then re-read" status on my personal reading list!

A dazzling combination of suspense, horror, and romance

You have not read a book until you have read Watchers by Dean Koontz. Why? I will try to be brief.. no book can ever match the powerful beginning of this novel. It was gripping, thrilling, from page 3. There is a lot of description, but Dean has a way of making every description useful and enjoyoyable - unlike some authors who bore you to death with totally irrelevant paragraphs. His characters may be extreme in some ways, nevertheless, they were painted into realistic people that can indeed exist in real life. For the first few chapters.. you will be intrigued at how different incidents can be connected.. then slowly and with a lot of mystery, the story begins to connect and become clearer.Travis, Nora, Einstein, and Vince are the main characters in the book. Dean allows you to see the world from their eyes, which can be fascinating because they are fascinating characters! Einstein, the dog, will capture your heart. Even the evil presence in the story will have you sympathize with it. The plot is structured so well that there is no spot where the action slows down. Given the long time within which the story takes place, this novel is very fast paced and will leave you at the edge of your seat. And I have to confess that Koontz does not leave you unsatisfied or frustrated at any point. The characters will ask the questions that you have in your mind, and the action will keep you fully aware of the current situation. The suspense will leave you shuddering, and the romance will warm your heart. This is a story that is full of emotion.. where there is a lesson at the end for mankind. It will stay in my heart to the end of my life.
