Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints. It may result in discomfort, rigidity, and, in extreme situations, spinal fusion. Inflammatory pain in the back:
One of AS's primary symptoms is inflammatory back pain. This type of pain usually wakes people up in the second half of the night and is characterized by lower back stiffness and soreness. Moving usually relieves the pain; lying down usually makes it worse.

In AS patients, the sacroiliac joints the points at the base of the spine where the sacrum and ilium bones meet are often inflamed. Sacroiliitis is the cause of pain and stiffness in the lower back.

Over time, inflammation in the spine may lead to syndesmophytes, or the growth of new bone, and in more serious cases, vertebral fusion. As a result, the spine may become more rigid and less flexible, which could have an impact on range of motion and postur
