Loved this book!

I loved that this book was based on real people - strong courageous women to be more specific. It made me curious to know more about the sisters and the foundation they set for change.

Great Read!

If you loved The Secret Life if Bees, you will love this one!!

Unforgettable story of Real-Women heroes and their Antebellum Lives

History buffs looking for real tales of Pre-Civil War examples of the horrifically difficult lives of blacks, but also the unfair dismissal of white women in the American South’s patriarchal society will recognize strength and courage in this fictional recounting of true history, featuring some of our forgotten female role models who helped light the passionate fires which started the American Civil War.

Captivating and quick read.

Kidd is a wonderful author who didn’t let me down with this novel. I enjoyed the way each chapter switched back and forth between characters.

An amazing and revealing story based on real historic figures.

Don’t miss out on this book. It will not disappoint you. It’s beautiful, but brutal in parts. I’ve read and studied the people in those times, but my eyes were opened to unknown details of their daily lives; the people came alive for me. This book left me with a great and permanent admiration for their perseverance and strength of character. The juxtaposition of the lives of the slave child and the privileged but unusual girl who received her as a gift was well written. As the book continues you learn how they learn, grow, and face hardships. These are women who deserve a bigger appreciation for their contributions to a better world. I also recommend Sue Monk Kidd’s book, The Book of Longings. It is also well-researched, well-written, and one that will stay with you long after you’ve finished.

Terrific read!

This book is awesome and even better it's based on true stories. I loved it and couldn't put it down. It makes real historical events super interesting. I love learning and being entertained all at once and appreciate writers who make that happen.

Good writing but lacking in appeal

Kidd came forth with a great piece showing the emotional effects slavery had on both the slave and the master. While I did enjoy the story as it continued, it lacked the emotional pull that I wanted to gain. I wanted to be drawn more into her characters to the point of sympathizing on a deeper level. It was a good read but it left me feeling unfilled and unsatisfied.
