The Secret Life of Bees is the best known book and first novel written by Sue Monk Kidd. Born in 1948 in Georgia, Kidd earned a B.S. in nursing from Texas Christian University and has worked as registered nurse and nursing instructor. She took writing courses at Emory University, Anderson College (now Anderson University) and several writers conferences. The Secret Life of Bees, published in 2002, spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, was translated into thirty-six languages, and won numerous awards. It was adopted for the stage and turned into a feature film starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, and Jennifer Hudson. Kidd's bestselling second novel, The Mermaid Chair, became a television movie and won the Quill Award for General Fiction. She lives in Florida.
