The Eighth Square

While Alice makes her way across the chessboard countryside toward becoming a queen, the story never asks what the other pieces are doing off-page - particularly Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who vanish from the narrative after their rattle-battle and never rejoin Alice's journey. This side story imagines a parallel adventure: while Alice sleeps through the events of Chapter V onward, Tweedledum, feeling wronged by his brother over "who really won" their fight, sets off alone across the board to prove himself by reaching the eighth square before Alice does - not realizing that pawns, not overgrown nursery-rhyme twins, are the only pieces meant to make that journey.

Along the way he blunders into the same looking-glass logic Alice navigated (things running backward, reasoning that only works if you don't examine it, characters who are furious about being characters), but without Alice's patience or curiosity, and with his brother trailing reluctantly behind trying to talk sense into him. It's a story about sibling rivalry, the difference between winning an argument and being right, and what it looks like to want to matter in a story that has already been written around someone else.
