Assigned to the CIA's survivalist school in the Appalachians, Sasha Kopytina intercepts a short wave radio transmission from a long-dormant Russian sleeper agent, a spy ring headed up by her father. They went off the grid after the Berlin Wall fell twenty-five years ago. A quick phone call to her half-brother, Sam Mulchay, in the CIA's Black Ops, and he appears on the scene under the guise of FBI Special Agent Adam Brookfield. Sam arrives in the dusty, hot small town of Brownville, Alabama, to investigate and quickly finds himself caught up in the spiraling mystery of the disappearance of several local girls. Every cop on the force seems either incompetent or corrupt except perhaps Lieutenant Melanie Parker, who won't let "Adam" undertake this investigation on his own, much to his chagrin. When the local pastor, Preacher Dawson, goes missing after the cops are called in to search his house and an officer winds up dead, the stink of both the small-town police and Brownville worsens. As one clue leads to the next and more people are killed, Sam and Melanie find themselves deeper and deeper in unsettling circumstances, leaving Sam to wonder how an old Russian sleeper agent is connected to the disappearing girls and who the mastermind is behind it all.
