Erased Twice

By Scott Lomac

Las Vegas, now. Catherine Battah has walked the alley behind the Strip twice in daylight, which is how she knows tonight is wrong. She has been Jenny Morris, Petra Kowalski, Celine Winters. She was made twice: as a child, behind wire in Ukraine, in a fake American town its survivors called Coca-Cola City; and again in the Mojave, by the Americans, to scour the first making out of her. In fifty-one years nobody has given her a name of her own. Three suppressed rounds in the back settle who she will be next.

Andrei Cherchill fired them. He was given a window and a lane; someone he never saw was shutting doors ahead of her.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Jeff Hutchins relocated Cathy and built her cover himself. FBI agent Ginger Delaney believes a person is what the record says. Dr. Dana Fuller, the Bureau's pathologist, knows what erasers forget: nobody thinks about teeth. What they uncover is Operation Firebird: Soviet children seeded into the American underworld in 1988 and abandoned when the country that made them dissolved.

Somebody took the trouble to erase Cathy twice. To learn who thought her worth the bullets, they must find how many of her classmates still keep their appointed hour - and who in Washington needed her silenced before she could keep hers.
