Pia lost her parents and baby brother to a house fire at age 4. Her grandmother died when she was 12 and Pia was sent to an orphanage. She met Portia there, but the older girl later moved to Maryland, leaving Pia in New York. Pia married young, not because she loved Arty, but because she was so alone. She continued to write to Portia, telling her about her abusive husband, but she never allowed Arty to know she had a friend. She runs away to Maryland and becomes smitten with Jake who thinks she is perfect despite her demons. She still fears fire and she is becoming more frigid with each passing day. Pia soon tells Portia she dislikes being touched and Jake must pursue her without ever kissing her or even holding her hand. With the help of a psychologist, she finds the strength to overcome her fear of the flames and her phobia for human touch. Jake helps her heal, telling her he would step into the flames to save her from the demon fire. She feels safe with Jake as she finally finds her destiny.
