This tale is a work of fiction, but it is rooted in my experience of growing up in a large family who lived over a flower shop. Dreaming of Hyacinths reflects on the magic and wonder that my older sibling, called Kate in the story, discovered as the child of two florists. She influenced my own vivid imagination and together we turned hyacinths sticks into bows and arrows, floral boxes into snow sleighs, and floppy baskets into three-cornered hats as we played Swamp Fox and evaded the Redcoats. We stole clumps of soil from Nonu's garden and went to war with neighborhood kids pitching dirt bombs in summer just as we hurled snowballs in winter. It was a magical childhood for all four of us, especially for the two oldest children named Kate and Cole Fiori.
