A wonderful entertaining story not only for gay people

This book is really entertaining. I thought it was going to be just a story for gay people but it goes beyond that, telling you about the frustrations of the main character and teaching you about the process and adventure of eventually accepting ourselves the way we are born. The Peruvian slang (which is everywhere in the book) is easily understandable by anyone who pays enough attention to the story. It's also a wonderful book to learn about machismo in Latin America, about racial issues in Peru and the anti-natural ethical code proposed by the Catholic church and other fundamentalist religious trends.

A book with controversial themes..well approached by Jaime B

No se lo digas a nadie deals with what is considered still a very controversial topic in most Latin American societies. Jaime Bayly explores the world of homosexuality and the reactions by the society in which one lives and the reader gets a taste of how people react, scorn, and alienate etc. homosexual and gay culture. The reader gets a picture of how the theme is dealt with in Lima, Peru but I think the reactions of people would be similar in other Latin cultures. Joaquin, the protagonist struggles against traditional values, his father's machismo while he discovers his own homosexual tendencies. Also, we learn that the protagonist is drug addict- cocaine in Peru is not that difficult to ascertain. This book is worth the read if you want to explore the many themes that are revealed by Jaime Bayly in the book: homosexuality, drug addiction, and the presence of machismo in the Latin culture. The language is strong but it goes hand and hand with the theme of the book.

Por fin un escritor Peruano habla sobre un tema gay

Ya era tiempo que por fin, alguien en el Peru hable de un tema que todavia sigue siendo tabu. La realidad de las cosas son que en el Peru, la homosexualidad no se habla. Quizas para muchos el simple hecho de ser gay todavia lo ven como algo extranjero. El machismo, la religion y la sociedad en general no ayudan nada en si. Para muchos quizas es dificil entender el slang peruano pero mejor que se alla escrito asi. Joaquin es una persona joven y si se hubiese escrito de otra forma la novela no tendria una buena aceptacion juvenil. Tambien vi la pelicula pero el libro esta mucho mejor. Espero que los homosexuales tengan mas aceptacion en el Peru y que no piensen que todos somos solo estilistas de pelo.

Es la mejor novela que haya leido,me encante ese saborcito tan satirico,burlon,e inteligente con que se narran y describen a los personajes, sin duda al leerla te hace vivir en tu subconciente la historia.

muy, muy divertido y muy cruel a veces.

no soy gay, ni vivo en nueva york, ni en lima. ni siquiera en madrid, que fue donde lei el libro, hace ya unos meses. A mi me encanto, dialogos super cachondos. Entiendo que se puede querer abrazar a otro de tu mismo sexo. yo soy madrileña hasta la medula, y bayly es atractivo en mi ciudad, porque es muy irreverente. y todo lo irreverente en madrid gusta un monton. ahora, la obra no es tan conocida, porque mucha gente no entiende el eslang peruano. yo si, porque tengo un primo chileno al que adoro. para mi esta chupado (en el buen sentido, señores) de leer. lo recomiendo. en madrid ser gay tambien es tabu, y bueno, en general llevan una vida envuelta en un halo de misterio, tipo, no tengo idea de lo que haces los fines de semana, pero igual te quiero, y no estoy dispuesta a despreciarte por ser gay. chau a todos.
