Book Overview

"Mother Mason" is a heartwarming portrayal of American family life in the early 20th century. Centered on the character of Molly Mason, the story explores the intricate dynamics of a bustling Midwestern household. Written with the gentle humor and keen observation characteristic of Bess Streeter Aldrich, this work delves into the everyday triumphs and tribulations that define the domestic sphere. From the romantic entanglements of the older children to the mischievous antics of the younger ones, the narrative captures the essence of small-town values and the enduring strength of maternal influence. The book serves as a charming chronicle of a bygone era, highlighting the universal themes of love, sacrifice, and the bonds that tie a family together. Readers will find in "Mother Mason" a timeless celebration of the unsung heroism found within the walls of the family home.

Delightful fun! Collection of well-written stories.

The book is actually a collection of intertwined short stories, all about the members of the Mason family. The book includes a little history of Aldrich's Mason family stories, and their huge popularity at the turn of the century. I just love this book; it's funny and timeless - no matter what generation it is, the basics of family emotions doesn't change. Moms feel the same way whether it's 1910 or 2008, young people fall in love, kids get into mischievous fun, households get hectic. I was literally laughing out loud -while cringing along- at one of the daughter's fear of having her beau meet her family. Anyone who has brought a boyfriend/girlfriend home to meet a houseful of loud, fun, overwhelming, joking relatives can relate. Readers of all ages will enjoy this book, relating to the characters in all the different stages of life. I think many moms will definitely enjoy this book; as will young adult readers who will get a kick out of the kids' situations, and many older readers will have a great deal of fun recalling back on their own life experiences and family life. Aldrich is an AMAZING writer. Those familiar with her work will love Mother Mason, those who are new to Aldrich will probably want to read more of her books after enjoying this one, although this is definitely one of her most humorous books. The thing with Aldrich is, her writing is not only excellent but REAL. You feel as if you personally know the characters. She's a wonderful story teller and interspersed are comments and observations that stand alone. The reader knows how each character feels, what their emotions are, and it works because all of it is timeless. Many, many times while reading this book I said "that's JUST how I feel/felt!". There's a comfort in that. This book is also pure fun, without angst. Enjoy!!

Pleasant Reading

This delightful book follows the exploits and adventures of the Mason family. Smalltown life in Iowa is described in warm, friendly detail. An excellent book for relaxing on a lazy afternoon or a busy day escape.
