Hippolytus of Rome was the most important third-century theologian in the developing orthodox church in Rome, where he was probably born; nonetheless, his works were composed in Greek. He is described as a disciple of Irenaeus. He came into conflict with the popes of his time and seems to have headed a schismatic group as a rival bishop of Rome.
