"Oh incongruous assembled, therefore, ...

... we affirm the world is insane an' will elect a nutty leader to cope with it!" The predictions of Pogo's friend Porky have come true. Those words, written around 1967, seem uncommonly apt today. The 1968 parts of the book took place in an election year, traditionally a festive event in the swamp. It's much more low-key this year than previously, with few of the goings-on of previous years. Instead, the silliness is more intensely political than in the past. The candidates appear in recognizable form: an LBJ-like longhorn representing the incumbent, plus a flock of ridiculous windup toys. I'm sure Prince Pompadoodle and the rest were familiar back then, but only the Bobby Kennedy and Richard Nixon characters remain recognizable. And, since it's an election year, Mole comes out again, with his secret police attitude and myopic mishaps. The goofiness goes on in the pointed but gentle manner so typical of Pogo - civil and respectful even in opposition, a trait that has since become extinct. Then, in the end, Pogo celebrates Christmas morning with his shy but close friend Porky. The book closes on that dawn, with Porky saying "There's nothing like a new-painted morning, Pogo." It's a gentle reminder that beauty is still there to be seen, no matter what. //wiredweird
