John Newbery was an eighteenth century bookseller from England who specialized in publishing books for young readers. In 1921 the US publisher Frederic Melcher proposed an award named after him (about 15 years before he also proposed the Caldecott Award), making it the oldest continuous prize in children's literature. Today the award it sponsored by the American Library Association.
