A gift for Mom on Mother's Day, from the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees and the forthcoming novel The Book of Longings, a novel about two unforgettable American women.
Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world.

I loved that this book was based on real people - strong courageous women to be more specific. It made me curious to know more about the sisters and the foundation they set for change.

Published by CeCe Reigle , 1 year ago
History buffs looking for real tales of Pre-Civil War examples of the horrifically difficult lives of blacks, but also the unfair dismissal of white women in the American South’s patriarchal society will recognize strength and courage in this fictional recounting of true history, featuring some of our forgotten female role models who helped light the passionate fires which started the American Civil War.
Captivating and quick read.

Kidd is a wonderful author who didn’t let me down with this novel. I enjoyed the way each chapter switched back and forth between characters.

This book is awesome and even better it's based on true stories. I loved it and couldn't put it down. It makes real historical events super interesting. I love learning and being entertained all at once and appreciate writers who make that happen.
Good writing but lacking in appeal

Kidd came forth with a great piece showing the emotional effects slavery had on both the slave and the master. While I did enjoy the story as it continued, it lacked the emotional pull that I wanted to gain. I wanted to be drawn more into her characters to the point of sympathizing on a deeper level. It was a good read but it left me feeling unfilled and unsatisfied.
