Born in Albany, New York in 1954, Gregory Maguire is the author of novels and stories for children and adults. Many of his books, such as Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, are transformational retellings of familiar children's stories. Wicked is the basis for the long-running Broadway show and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister was adapted into a television movie. Maguire earned his B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany and his Ph.D. in English and American literature from Tufts University, writing his dissertation about children's fantasy. In addition to fellowships and residencies, Maguire has been an artist in residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. He was a professor and associate director of the Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons College and continues to be an advocate of children's literature. Maguire lives in Massachusetts.
