Helpful Ideas and Great News for Chocolate Addicts

Good news on the chocolate front and for coffee lovers. Drink diet soda or take supplements? You'll be pleased with what "A Woman's Guide to Good Health" has to say. Like to clean - well, maybe not such good news. Carrie Carter M.D. appears to be the kind of doctor most women want to visit. Her bedside manner must be a treat, as she had me laughing throughout the book. Seriously. My favorite bit of humor was a reference to sprouted couch potatoes. I own a half a dozen books on the subjects of herbs/supplements, stress reduction, personality and general health. I learned more from Dr. Carter's fact filled 203 page paperback than I have from all the others combined. Dr. Carter offers clear, jargon light medical and common sense help, charts, resources and conviction without guilt or shame. Though there are not nine chapters on the different personality types, she manages to provide the skeleton and show how personality effects stress levels. Her chapter regarding free radicals and anti-oxidants is also brief yet packed full of useful information. As a medical professional who is surrounded by labs, diagnoses and jargon, I didn't expect to learn as much as I did. Dr. Carter did her homework, citing studies, digging into myths and laying out data. She evaluated diets and supplements and shared important information on exercise and its value. She covers menopause in detail, but not pregnancy, birth or lactation. Women over thirty will benefit the most from her book, though I would highly recommend it to any female. Based on the cleanliness of her writing and her acknowledgement pages, she put a lot of time into the actual mechanics of writing the book, too. I appreciate the effort Dr. Carter put into the crafting of this book on top of her medical expertise and research.

Small book packed full of information

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (3/06) Carrie Carter, M.D. tells us that stress reduction is the one issue that, if improved, would probably make the greatest difference in most of our lives. Stress reduction is the stimulus that sets other negative actions in motion -- all of which interfere with our ability to thrive. And according to John 10:10, Jesus wants us to thrive, to live abundantly. For 16 years, Dr. Carter was a board-certified primary care physician. She was forced to give up her medical practice because of her battle with Meniere's disease and lupus. Due to God's faithfulness, Dr. Carter felt led to educate others, especially women, on health information to encourage them to improve their lives, through her books, articles, and radio and TV programs. Dr. Carter focuses on women's health issues, but men can certainly gain a wealth of useful information relevant to their needs also. Due to her knowledge as a doctor and her personal pain with her own health, Dr. Carter does an excellent job of passing along pertinent information in a humorous and entertaining fashion. Dr. Carter is quick to point out that the state of our spiritual life is the most important key to thriving. When we are right with God, all other factors will fall in place. Proper nutrition and healthy weight loss with exercise are covered thoroughly by Dr. Carter in her 12 Steps to Good Nutrition and The Ten Commandments of Healthy Weight Loss. Exercise is explained with her Fitness Triad. To help make all the information even easier to comprehend, we are shown easy-to-understand charts summarizing the most important information. Many additional resources and websites are mentioned throughout offering even more facts and data. I was humored by The Science Behind Weight Gain and Weight Loss or what often seems like The Frustrating Laws of Weight Gain and Weight Loss. Dr. Carter will keep you smiling throughout. For such a small book, as it measures only approximately 4"x7", "A Woman's Guide to Good Health" is certainly packed with a tremendous amount of information, so much so that you'll want to read every word! The only drawback I had was that the print is somewhat small, so I found it difficult to read for any extended amount of time. "A Woman's Guide to Good Health" covers disease prevention, menopause, current and popular studies and opinions, and spiritual health. I found Dr. Carter's discussion on free radicals and antioxidants to be of particular interest to myself. It appears to me that Dr. Carter's book has been thoroughly researched and that she is very knowledgeable on the subjects she writes. I would suggest picking up a copy and keeping it in your purse for whenever you have a few moments to read. If suggestions seem difficult at first, Dr. Carter encourages us to just begin one day at a time - take that first step. This is the type of book you will refer back to often and want to pass along to all your female friends! I

An excellent review of women's health issues.

Doctor Carter has a winner in this book. She discusses many subjects important to women's health, but in simple and easy to understand language. Her explanations of exercise alternatives, nutritional traps, heart disease, menopause and many other subjects could be very valuable to women of all ages. There is a religious tone to the book that I did not find unpleasant, but it might turn some readers off. This is a small issue compared to the large amount of information on various health subjects. I recommend it highly.
