Good read

I found this book very helpful in understanding the divide when we come to racial issues. As a non-African American it explained how African Americans view racial reconciliation and addressed some common attitudes held by non-African Americans that contribute to the divide between races. I would recommend this book to anyone serious about addressing prejudice, racism and racialization.

Must Reading!

This book deserves 5 stars. It's well written (not "great literature" but easy to read and understand) and it's the only book on this topic I've read that addresses these issues so clearly and forthrightly without pulling punches. He's not afraid to name names at times, either. My only hesitation at this point: My ignorance of Black history doesn't allow me to make a judgment about the accuracy of his quotations and statements, or the accuracy of the historians whose books he cites. Judging by the rest of the book, though, I would assume that he is correct in what he writes. This book is a cry for help, a call to attention, and a sober and prophetic warning. To me, it's must reading for Evangelical pastors and churches. I intend to give a copy to our pastor (a large and largely White church) for him and the elders to read and see if it gives them insights on what's the right thing to do in reaching the minority members of our town. I gave my copy to a Black friend/pastor I know and am looking forward to discussing it with him. It's also must reading for ANY White Christian who wants to begin taking steps on the road to racial partnership* with Black Christians.* Note that I did not say "racial reconciliation." After reading this book, you will never use that term again, if you have been prone to use it.Bravo, Clarence Shuler! He counts as one of his closest friends Gary Chapman. I assume this is the Gary Chapman who wrote the LOVE LANGUAGES books. Those are excellent books, too!

This is a very realistic book written from the heart.

If you want an overview of the racial situation in America and the history leading up to where we are now, then this book is a must! Schuler describes personal experiences that are common to minorities and especially African Americans growing up in America. It also very clearly gives guidelines that anyone can follow to assist in promoting racial harmony in this county, by both African Americans and Caucasions. It is a very objective view of the racial climate in our churches today. As a pastor I can see that there is much work that needs to be done by Christians to solve this problem by beginning in the churches.
