An entertaining YA read

The first of the four Whitney Cousins books, this book introduces 15-year-old Heather, who is forced to move from Seattle to tiny Fox Crossing after her mother's remarriage. Brokenhearted at leaving her cousin and best friend Amelia, as well as the aunt, uncle and cousins that often feel more like home than her own mother, Heather nonetheless tries her best to forge a family bond with her new stepfather Will and stepsister Tracey. Meanwhile, the family housekeeper is determined to hate Heather, and keeps knocking her efforts down. But with the support of her new Fox Crossing friends, and her cousin Amelia back in Seattle, Heather still manages to come out on top when a strange mixup threatens to ruin Tracey's chances at a college scholarship.

The author has a real talent with characters.

This book is by far the best I have read of Jean Thesman's work. It is, all at the same time, funny, emotional, extremely realistic, and very easy to read because of its proximity to real life. The characters are realistic, likeable, believable, and easy to imagine. Also, the situations in this book seem like real life, and not even close to something out of a repititious high school series.
