Excellent Reading

This book tells the true tale of Kathleen Dayus and her life in England in the 20th Century. It tells of her growing up in the Birmingham Slums and the hardships that people faced in those days. It tells how she lost her children and worked hard for years to ensure that she could get her children back. It is a reminder to all of the horrific hardships that people had to endure during there lives if they were poor. This is a thoroughly entertaining read that I would recommend to anyone.

Warts and all view of growing up poor

Fascinating insight into growing up poor in turn of the century Birmingham, England. I think this may originally have been 2 books, The first part is told from a child's point of view, the latter part as an adult. The detailed descriptions and interesting characters draw you into the story and provide a real sense of being there. Excellent fodder for family historians.
