The Lusty Men (3.5 stars)

This was one of the best EL novels I have read; I actually shed tears over a couple of scenes. I loved the sense of adventure (the thought of going to the land down under--Australia and under the sea), so different from my own life. I do think romance authors ("The Soldier and the Rose", also an EL novel, comes to mind) feel that the heroine cannot have more than one true love (true, she can only be married to one at a time), even if she is married to them at different times (as in the case with "Rose", in which her husband is killed and she remarries). Only one can be her soul mate. Isn't it possible to have two? Or perhaps even more? Can love really be that simple? I don't think so. Here, Chloe has Evan and Daniel. Did Evan not love her enough to stop the wedding, or did Evan love her too much, unselfishly, to stop the wedding because he didn't want to tie her down to a man who couldn't (or wouldn't) give her and her baby the kind of stabile home he knew Daniel would? Evan comes across as a selfish man when he tries to tempt Chloe into leaving her husband, and yet, he performs medical services to those in third world countries, something I am not sure, as selfless as Daniel is with Chloe and loving Brianna, who may or may not be his, would be willing to do. People do not come in neat little packages with labels. I think the author did a good job of creating complex characters. However, though Chloe's reaction after committing adultery with Evan is in character, I still think she would have enjoyed herself while in the act. It seemed like such a cop-out for the spell to be magically (and conveniently) broken after sleeping with him (I would think it would have intensified her feelings more, or at least befuddled her, for she had been very much in love with this man at one time and had believed herself to be still), even knowing he had gotten there in time to stop the wedding, even if he hadn't been ready for marriage himself. The guilt and shame I understand, but the lack of pleasure on her part in acting upon her feelings I did not. It also bothered me that Chloe had no intention of confessing her sin to her husband, who she went back home to and slept with after having just been with Evan. I thought that was pretty despicable on her part, for that means her marriage to him after her brief encounter until she was caught was a lie. She was only thinking of herself by not telling him, because she didn't want to lose him. She knew she had gotten the better catch. As for Daniel, he was like a knight in shining armor...until he cheated. Separation is still married, it is not divorced. Just because she cheated on him first doesn't justify his screwing some fat widow he meets in the desert Outback. That did not set well with me. It was like it was okay when he did it, and how did the author figure this woman, Ingrid, was helped/healed by Daniel's sleeping with her, I'll never know. It sounded contrived, like their accounts had

Emotional

I read this book today. I used ebook format and read it in one sitting. What a fantastic book, each page is captivating and a real page turner. The author has brought out the conflicting emotions of Chole wonderfully, Daniel is everyday hero, every woman wants a man like him for her life. For those who like like emotional, tear jerker , a must read !!!! Most of us has the question "What if" in our mind and the author has answered that for Chloe wonderfully in this book...

Heartbreaking!

Chloe fell in love hard and fast with Evan, an Australian doctor, she thought would be around forever. After he leaves, she turns to her friend Daniel, and after one night of passion with him, she realizes she is pregnant and is unsure whose child she carries. Daniel asks Chloe to marry him, he decides no matter whose child she carries, he loves Chloe and will love the child as his own. Chloe knows Evan is her one true love, but accepts Daniel's marriage proposal to give her child the family it deserves. Their daughter, Brianna looks just like her mom and shows no signs of who fathered her. Daniel raises Brianna and is her Dad, but through the years he knows Evan still holds a part of Chloe's heart. The angst in Chloe when she makes her life decisions makes this novel a real tear jerker. Coming alive as the pages turn, WHEN LOVE IS TRUE is a book to be read alone when no one will see the tears fall. Chloe is a strong woman who accepts her lot in life and does her best to be a good wife and mother, but she continues to wonder, what if. When she gets the chance to find out, she finds out she made the right choices and has her true love in her life. Daniel is a man who made the only decision he could and loves Brianna and Chloe with no reserve. He is the man every woman wants by her side in life. Joan Kilby has created a novel that no words can describe. Emotional and fulfilling WHEN LOVE IS TRUE can only be described as a true love romance. The tenth novel in the Everlasting Love series by Harlequin, this is one of the best reads from the line. If you only chose to read one novel from this line, this is the novel to buy!
