What Breaks Free: Broken Before Taken

By Orion Drake

The capital is breaking. Amanda intends to choose where it falls.

Oakhaven still has walls, soldiers, and sealed orders. What it no longer has is trust. Princess Amanda Frostbite has severed its roads, turned its messengers against one another, and left every frightened officer wondering which command will betray them next. She does not need a glorious siege. She needs the kingdom's chain of command to collapse before its defenders understand they have already lost.

Taking the city is only the beginning.

Food routes fail. Records burn. Forged orders carry Amanda's seal. Mind-control bindings rupture in public, and hungry districts turn every rumor into another weapon. The demons beside her begin treating her hard-won methods as tools they can claim, while the people beneath her rule cannot decide whether she is their conqueror, their protector, or something worse.

Then the Eternal Flame remakes her magic. Frost, once her surest answer, grows slow and distant. Fire answers at once, hotter than command and harder to hide. Every victory leaves Amanda more powerful, more exposed, and less certain that the alliance carrying her toward the throne will ever allow her to stand there freely.

To hold Oakhaven, Amanda must rule a broken capital, survive the allies studying her weaknesses, and protect the hidden roads that may one day let her escape them.

The crown is within reach. Freedom is not.

What Breaks Free is Book 6 of Demon Princess Ascension, a dark progression fantasy series of tactical magic, military conquest, political pressure, and a morally gray heroine who earns every dangerous step. The series is intended to be read in order.
