Book Overview

Everyone knows that dieting without exercise doesn't work. But not all exercises are equally effective. Weights for Weight Loss explains why weight training is the best way to get in shape and provides readers with a comprehensive program that will guarantee success. The author dispels the five myths of weight training (fat turns to muscle, lifting makes for bulky muscles, weights are for men, it's easy to get hurt, heavier is better) and details...

Great book!

Great book for the novice whose just starting to get into weights to tone up and lose weight.

I love this book!!!

I primarily bought this book for the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit workout listed on the back cover. The day I received it I read the entire book in one sitting. For such a tiny book, there was so much information covered that I hadn't read in other books (ex. metabolism, what is a calorie, mental focusing, etc.). I was very impressed by all this, but the workouts themselves WOW. I love the clear descriptions of the workouts and the explanations of what results to expect. I have only tried the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit and I incorporated into my current schedule rather than one of those listed in the book. I thought it was awesome and I definitely felt challenged. The exercises themselves have clear and concise descriptions and pictures on the movements. There are many basic exercises that are found in many other books, but there are also many I haven't seen before and love them already (ex. scooped flye for pectorals, lat pull side, single leg squat, most of the core series, etc.). This book doesn't skimp on the stretching moves as do many other books. For only 96 pages it is well packed with information, 4 workouts, 3 programs, and a nice catalog of exercises. In regard to working out with books: I love this method because (1) I can keep up without having someone else set my pace and rhythm. (2a) Working out doesn't interfere with my TV watching in the evening. (2b) I can get in a workout at a decent time (I don't have a fancy recording device to help with this problem and don't really want to fork out money for one).(3) I am my best motivator. I really felt Ellen Barrett was motivating, especially because her first exercise is a mental one: you are responsible for you and your weight loss Overall, I love this book and truly believe it's a great addition to my growing library of exercise and fitness books. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exercise and fitness.

Exactly what it says it is

I've been using the exercises in this book for the past couple weeks now. It is a lot of fun. I bought it because I was bored with my regular routine. I wanted to try some new/different exercises, but I was having trouble thinking of any. I was pleased when I opened the book and saw how many exercises there were. They are all free-weight exercises. Each exercise is explained and has a few pictures to go with it, so you will definitely understand how to do it. Also, what I really like is that it has routines to follow. Each one accomplishes something different. If you already know a lot of weight exercises you would be wasting your money, but I'm happy with this purchase, it's exactly what I was looking for

Weight training made easy

The author offers a complete idea which includes 3 training schedules. The instructions given with each exercise are clear and to the point. There are 4 workouts in the book. The writer makes certain that the reader understands the purpose of each workout and what to expect as a result of performing the exercises in the workout as illustrated. This book is great for beginners and even those of us who have lifted for years.

Not just for women

I'm a 54 year old male who was looking for an exercise guide that demanded as little equipment as possible. I found it in Ellen Barrett's "Weights for Weight Loss". All that's required is a pair of dumbells and an excercise mat. At first I was squeamish about getting this book because, well, it's for GURLS! Or so it appears. Believe me, I just finished the 30 minute "super sculpt" routine, which took me more like an hour because, well, I'm 54 and in no big rush. And my body feels like it's just been given as fine a workout as I've ever had. I plan on making Ellen Barrett's guide a central focus of my exercise program. It's one of the best, simplest guides, well laid out with great diagrams and clear instructions, that you'll come across, and it's guaranteed to give a complete workout to anybody, man or woman.
