A very good intro for a newbie !!!

I found there are two extreme opionions about this book. One said it's good intro, the other said it's bad. My opionion is that this book is really good for a newcomer who wants to learn windows programming faster and easier. Of course this book doesn't explain much on how MFC works, but for an intro book, it is really good (although it's a little bit too wordy and TOO THICK). For those who already know windows programming, go to find some other books particularly on MFC programming!!!

Excellent win programming start-up book

i had 2 years experience in c++ before this book and wanted to quickly learn windows programming using vc5(now i'm looking for good vc6 book)! and this book just perfectly suited my needs, thank you Kate!

Finally!

This is the best book on Visual Programming I have yet to read. The book is great for those familiar with C++, but who do not know how to program in Windows. Gregory explains all the major details well, and in an ordered fashion. The sample applications are targetted for each chapter so it is easier to see the relevent material being used.

Most complete Visual C++ reference.

This book is not only a superb reference book, but does a great job at TEACHING the reader the concepts behind Visual C++ including the why/how. To fit the text in under 1,000 pages, some material was eliminated, but I found that most of it was contained on the 5 electronic-formatted books on the CD-ROM. So all in all, this is the most complete Visual C++ reference I have read.

good, really good

I had programmed neither database nor VC++ before I read this book. I am just an expert in medical imaging application developement. One day, one client of me asked me to write a program to deal with the image database files which should be in Access .mdb file format. Then I chose VC++ to do the work. I went to the bookstore, found this book, bought it, and read only the Chapter 22 and Chapter 23, and finished job in just one day. My client was happy, I was happy too. I don't know whether or not other books are good. But this one is good. I bought this one only because I saw the following on its cover: "The Most Complete Reference" ( about VC++ ) I found it really does.
