Gentle, elderly Ronald Challis, an archaeologist, drops his more peaceable pursuits to look for the sculptor of twelve girls- statuary- glimpsed in a London garden. Several others are anxious to find Paul Grasset, an unscrupulous character, charming and predatory:- one of his models and victims- Polly- who believes her sister is now with him; an American investigator for a collector he had duped with a fraud known as the Rocamadour Reliefs; his brother; and a couple of dubious dealers. From London to Athens to an island, the search becomes more intricate and more intense; there is the insinuation of blackmail and the suspicion of murder- with the final revenge which Professor Challis cannot circumvent or prevent....Primarily for the mystery market, this is a little more for the more money involved; the styling is attractive and the surroundings atmospheric.
