Love can blossom in the most unlikely of circumstances--you should always be on the lookout Giant Of Mesabi Rolt Matthews is as solid and as strong as Minnesota's famed Iron Range, and the mines he controls have made him a fortune. But he'll need a soft touch to convince beautiful Alanna Powell that she's his one and only . . . and make her his forever. The Thawing Of Mara Now that's an interesting nickname. Financial company CEO Sinclair Buchanan is known as . . . Sin. Mara Prentiss just wishes she didn't have to rent her Pennsylvania cottage to him, even if it's perfect for weekend getaways. Will he be staying alone? Since she mentioned it, no. And if Mara's free, so is he. Remember, true love isn't just for fairy tales . . .
These are revised and recycled books from the halcyon days of light romance, when Janet Dailey was queen. After gothic paperback novels and nurse-loves-doctor books fell out of favor, the new genre of choice was the light romance. The formula always included a heroine who was young and virginal, and a hero who was rich and had a first name of one strong syllable, like Roarke, Clay, Bret, or Judd. There was plenty of sexual tension, but the sex itself usually happened after the closing chapter, and one had to use ones imagination, which worked well at the time. If you wanted steam, the historical novel was making its debut, with Rosemary Rogers at the head of the pack. The story went at the time (1970s and early '80s) that Janet Dailey and her husband, Bill, had sold their construction company, bought a recreational vehicle and taken off to see the country. To pass the time, she read the new light romance paperbacks and developed a really bad opinion of the writing. She made the comment that she could write a better one, and her husband told her to prove it. After that, she whipped out some of the most popular, eagerly anticipated romance novels of the decade. She did it at a rate of about one every month or two, if you can believe that, and she used different states of the US in each one, eventually hoping to have one book showcasing each state. I don't know if she ended up with 50 books or not, before she took off on the Calder series and other projects, but I know I was usually waiting at the book store for them to unpack her latest. I wouldn't mind seeing all of Ms. Dailey's books reprinted in their original form, but I think a partially updated version is neither here nor there, and loses too much in the "translation". You can throw in as many references to computers and cell phones and career women as you want but, despite Janet's considerable talent as a writer, the attitudes and action in her old books are fairly dated. That's just my personal opinion. I thought these revamped books would be very puzzling to anyone under 40 or 50, but I see that some readers are finding the strong male character and the understated sex to be refreshing. Glad to hear it - maybe Janet will write some new books in her classic "old" style!

I really enjoyed it! I have been reading romance novels by trial and error since I am new at reading romance books. So far, Janet Dailey is my favorite. I find her style of writing to be descriptive and detail-oriented but without bogging down the story or boring the reader like other authors do. This story brought out some of my emotions, which rarely other books do. At first in The Giant of Mesabi, I was surprised that she skipped the details of the love-making scene, however, as I read on, it did not bother me because I figured she just left that to the reader's imagination. The kissing and other scenes made me fall in love with Rolt Matthews (male character in the story who also resembles my boyfriend's personality). I was so into this story, that I felt like I was there. I enjoy romances that include characters that have difficult situations or complex relationships, and look forward to reading how they get out of it, if they do. I have not read the second story yet, but I love these types of characters and relationships. Overall, it's a great read. Just remember to not be distracted while you read it!

Try To Resist Me contains two novels: Giant of Mesabi & The Thawing of Mara Giant of Mesabi Alanna Powell, on break from college, returns home to her Minnesota mining town for the summer. There she meets back up with her charming boyfriend Kurt and his dark, arrogant and ruthless, brother Rolt (CEO of mining company). Alanna seeks to continue her relationship with Kurt, but Rolt has other ideas. He announces to Kurt that he plans to pursue Alanna -and Rolt always gets what he wants. Alanna is disgusted and appalled at the very idea, but at the same time can't help resisting his stolen kisses and embraces. Avoiding Rolt at all costs and turning into an ice princess when he's around, is her only option. Unfortunately, Alanna finds out that her family is in financial trouble and Rolt is the only one who can help. He offers her a job as his executive assistant -with no strings attached. Alanna accepts, not only for her family, but for the chance to beat Rolt at his own game and put him in his place -exactly where he belongs, but is it out of her life or in his arms? The Thawing of Mara: Mara is a bitter young women living in the Pennsylvania countryside with her paraplegic father. She blames him for all the misery in her life. Adam (she refers to him by his first name) walked out on Mara and her mother when Mara was fifteen years old. Mara, alone, cared for her mother up until her death from cancer several years ago. She has never forgiven Adam for what he has done to the family and takes every opportunity to tell him so. Mara's admits that her decision to take in her father, after his crippling car accident, is based soley on the fact that he contributed to her birth and nothing more. Even though she takes care of him, their relationship is frosty at best. Mara's property contains a small cottage at one end and she decides to rent it as another source of income. Super handsome and sexy CEO Sinclair Buchanan becomes the new tenant. Mara immediately dislikes him when he shows up to his new *love nest* with his latest bimbo. Much to her dismay, Adam and Sin become fast friends. Mara trys her best to avoid the handsome devil at all costs, especially since his kisses melt her like butter. She fights Sin at every turn, hoping (well maybe not) that he'll back down and give her some peace. Adam has other ideas and makes himself scarce at every opportunity while forcing Mara into Sin's company as much as possible. But how much coldness can Sin take before he gives up? And will Mara ever be able to forgive her father? I liked these two novels even though they were both about the love-hate relationship cliche. Both were well written and the characters were likeable. Nice and short (~150 pages each) romantic fluff. Good for an afternoon read. My only complaint is that there were no love scenes, just some heavy kissing. Really could have used some more spice.
