Janet Dailey was the pen name (and married name) of Janet Anne Haradon was born in 1944 in Storm Lake, Iowa. After graduating from high school in Independence, Iowa, she found work as secretary for a construction firm. One of the most successful American romance writers, Dailey sold as many as 300 million copies of her books. Once a secretary, Dailey decided to try writing romances after she read many of them on a cross-country trip. She soon became the first American writer published by Canadian publisher Harlequin. Among the hundred books she wrote were her fifty-book Americana series, featuring one book per U.S. state. Dailey died in 2013.
