Schoolcraft, Michigan became Kalamazoo County's first town on October 5, 1831. It was settled--not as a frontier town--but one with scholars and businessmen that traveled westward to make their fortune on this beautiful prairie. Schoolcraft boasts having the first lawyer, Lyman Daniels, and the first doctor, Dr. Nathan Thomas, in Kalamazoo County. The two homes owned by Dr. Nathan Thomas are still erect in Schoolcraft. The first home he built and practiced out of became a station on the Underground Railroad. The Schoolcraft Ladies Library has been in existence since 1879 and meets in their building that was erected in 1898.
