Excellent Patents Guide for Beginners

An elegantly written must-read book for students and inventors that describes the real journey from an idea to a finished product and the challenges in marketing and monetization. Protecting theft of intellectual property is essential for inventors and startups. Patents laws were written to protect the rights of inventors for 20 years. Inventors rarely benefit financially from their inventions, but the corporations that hire them for the work reap most of the rewards. Even in startups, founders often have to trade their patent rights for equity (towards a merger or acquisition), and deal with out-of-pocket patent costs in the early stages. As the author of over 50 technology patents, as the primary inventor, patent and claims writer, and having taken several revolutionary startups to successful acquisitions over the past 35 years, I am painfully aware of the immense challenges from patentability search to filing provisional, non-provisional, divisional, continuation-in-part, PCTs and foreign patents, replying to office actions, interviews with examiners, and dealing with patent trolls monetizing your sold patents. While patents increase the valuation of startups in later stages of funding (post revenue), many early stage (seed) investors view patents as an expense rather than an asset (since most exit with their liquidation preference before patents are infringed at a scale that warrants litigation). This book covers many aspects of the long journey, including cease-and-desist notices and negotiating patent licensing, and is an excellent resource for inventors who are founders of startups.
