Moody, atmospheric story of sugar cane planters in Australia

A tragic story steeped in the steamy atmosphere of Australian sugar cane plantations. An exotic take on an exotic time and place, 19th-century northern Australia, newly-peopled with European immigrants. Here, the Graus, who are Spanish, mingle with the Irish and the aborigines, making for some fascinating cultural encounters. Slightly reminiscent of Durrell's Alexandria Quartet. A recommended read!
