The Unread: A Novel in Several Lives
"We built ourselves a thousand windows to look at one another, and forgot how a door is opened."
In building number twelve on Lilac Lane, one hundred and forty-four apartments glow with the cold blue light of screens. Behind these glass windows, five neighbors live entirely separate lives, intimately connected to strangers across the globe but entirely isolated from the people on the other side of their walls.
Marina is a successful influencer with 112,000 followers but an agonizingly empty reality. Lyova commands a devoted army of gamers but has no real-world friends. Artyom moderates a popular dating app, reading the painful pleas of the lonely while hiding from love himself. Sonya, an invisible teen at school, pours her heart out to a secret online audience. And Nina Petrovna, an elderly widow, spends her nights lighting digital candles for the departed, wishing for a warm hand to hold.
They pass each other in the stairwell without a word-until a fierce winter ice storm brings down the power grid.
As the screens go black and the digital world falls silent, the crushing, icy darkness forces them out of their isolated boxes. Drawn together by the warm, flickering glow of a single real candle, these five strangers will spend a transformative night discovering the terrifying, beautiful truth of human connection.
The Unread by Elena Voss is a poignant, heartwarming novel about the modern epidemic of loneliness, the illusion of social media, and the profound courage it takes to step out from behind the glass, knock on a neighbor's door, and truly live.
