In 1868, the Mallory family is visited by a Lakota shaman who has been given a vision of the future for the buffalo nations on the western plains. That sets in motion a 1,500-mile journey in mule-pulled wagons from their home in Hannahville to the shining Bighorn Mountains. A journey fraught with much toil and many surprises. The Mallorys and their friends need to draw on their vast experiences from their time together in the Civil War to survive river crossings, adverse weather, bandits, and attempts to thwart their vision. Along the way, they encounter many people; some are helpful, some are dangerous, the more so the closer they get to the Lakota village of Crazy Horse. The Shining Mountains begins the journey that will lead up to the devastating conflicts with the 7th Cavalry, and another meeting with George Armstrong Custer in 1876.
