Book Overview

The Shadow of Ashlydyat is a gothic novel written by Mrs. Henry Wood. The story revolves around the mysterious and eerie Ashlydyat Manor, which is haunted by the shadow of a woman who was murdered there many years ago. The protagonist, Richard Barleigh, inherits the manor from his uncle and moves in with his wife, Lucy. As they settle into their new home, they begin to experience strange occurrences and encounter the ghostly shadow of the murdered woman. Richard becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about the murder and the identity of the shadow, leading to a thrilling and suspenseful climax. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, revenge, and the supernatural, and is a classic example of Victorian gothic literature. He came in and stood in the doorway, smiling down upon her. So shadowy, so thin his face utterly pale, his dark blue eyes unnaturally large, his wavy hair damp with the exertion of walking. Maria's heart stood still. She rose from her seat, unable to speak, the colour going and coming in her transparent skin; and when she quietly moved forward to welcome him, her heart found its action again, and bounded on in tumultuous beats. The very intensity of her emotion caused her demeanour to be almost unnaturally still. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
