The Mormons driven from Missouri in 1838-39 by the Extermination Order issued by Governor Boggs. With nowhere to go, the 5 to 6 thousand Saints were driven to the edge of the frozen Mississippi River, as refugees in late February. The kind people of Quincy Illinois took them in and fed,clothed and housed them. There were only 1,500 citizens of Quincy.
