Hip, Hip Hooray, This is a great read. I have said over and over, I like the old, old Harlequin Romance Books because to me they have more of a plot in the story, than having sex in every other chapter, or a manual on how to have sex. But I have conceded that I have to trade off, with old, mean, cold, hateful, cruel and abusive alpha males. Well I am happy to say this story by Jean Dunbar is a great story without even a hint of mean, old, cold, hateful, cruel, or abusive alpha males. In fact the alpha male is what every hero should be in books. Patricia Lang was so desperate that when Simon Verity offered Patricia a chance to make some money by pretending to be almost engaged to him, she reluctantly took his offer. But his older half-brother Richard Horton, got wind of the scheme and put an end to it. I really believe he fell in love with Patricia the moment he met her, but he had to work out how to get her to fall for him. Patricia was a sweet young woman who had fallen on hard times, because her stepfather had gotten involved in an embezzlement scheme, and had been killed with her mother in a car accident soon after his crime came to light. Richard had a problem, his sister and her husband were dead, they had also been killed in a automobile accident and they left three kids behind. By the way I am a sucker for stories with kids in them. Anyway the children, Peggy 11-yrs, David 6 and Peter(Podge)18 months, were all staying with Richard's cousin by marriage Mary Milstead. Although Tony Verity Mary's first husband had died as a mercenary, and left her with alone with their fourteen year old daughter Antoinette to care for. Now Mary was married to Charles Milstead but he too had an unfortunate accident, and his leg was badly injured. That was how Charles and Mary met, Mary was a nurse, she went to take care of him and his dad who was bedridden, Antoinette fell for her new father before Mary knew he was the right one for her, Toni knew. Anyway they married, and Charles is a wildlife photographer and he makes a descent living at it. But because Mary had a young baby herself by Charles. Richard felt it was too much to ask her to care for his sisters family any longer. So because his sister had lived next to Mary, Richard had Patricia installed in his sister's home and she was to care for the three kids. Mary being her next door neighbor could let Richard know is he made a mistake by having Patricia take on the kids. But it turned out that he needn't have worried, the four took to one another like ducks to water. Then steps in the evil female Lorraine Jorgens, she finds fault with everything Patricia does, and constantly tells Richard that he needs an older woman to step in and take control of the three children. When that doesn't work, Lorraine starts a whispering campaign to rid the veld of Patricia, and it works. But only until Richard found out about it. His solution, he tells Patricia they must marry. I don't want to give away any more but thi
