Book Overview

Reading about the slime- covered, non- Euclidean ruins of the sunken city of R'lyeh or the squamous, tentacled deity who slumbers there would make anyone hungry. Starting with the puns and working from there, authors Mike Slater and Thomas Roache have summoned forth 50 funny, bizarre, and horrible dishes such as:

- The Deep Fried Deep One
- Nog Sothoth
- Cthus-Koos
- The Great Old Buns
- The Gin and Miskatonic

Like H. P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon, the legendary and forbidden book of the dead that is "alien to all sane and balanced readers," this cookbook contains many dark (but still delicious) secrets within its pages. The book comes infested with sanity- melting and mouth- watering illustrations, as well as annotations full of crazed discoveries and desperate warnings about the recipes that brave readers will undertake.

OK recipes, tiresome writing

This isn't a *bad* book but I guess you have to be a lot more into Lovecraft than I am. The recipes mostly sound fine-to-good, but some of them are kind of extraneous (pasta baked in bread cups; lots of things done up to resemble eyeballs or tentacles). A friend let me borrow his copy with the idea that we'd cook something together but I'm having a hard time being enthusiastic because I know I'll do more of the work and I don't really want to to make . . . nacho cups shaped like spiders, when I could just make regular nachos with less effort and possibly better results. The second half of the book is the same recipes but written in normal wording, so you actually only get half as much book as it appears. So, this is entertaining but feels more like a novelty item than a usable cookbook.

Spooky cookbooks? Maybe we should call them spookbooks. Anyway, if you're someone who likes to create seasonally specific fare for your holiday dinner parties, here are fifteen cookbooks to help you put out macabre meals and sickening spreads.
