The Man Who Stops Time

When Adam's mother sacrifices her life to allow his birth, her perfect love for him becomes synonymous with the song that was played during his delivery. When he next hears the song as a five year old, the feeling that comes with it reverberates within him, creating a timeless interlude where everything appears to stop. Soon he learns the song by heart in order to repeat the same phenomenon. Gradually, he begins to use this new ability purposefully, finding he can do things while time is stopped that changes circumstances when it starts again. From saving a classmate from a bully, to rearranging a high school counselor's poorly-styled hair, Adam takes advantage of his new gift. Only he finds that what he personally wants as an outcome doesn't always materialize. For instance, when he stops time and demonstrates his affection for Brenda, it's obvious that she's felt his longing, yet has no reciprocal feelings for him.Years pass as Adam retreats into his work as a carpenter with his own company, never having completely gotten over his failure with Brenda. When they meet again, she asks for his help during a difficult time and Adam complies. Unfortunately, she still isn't interested romantically. As he's bemoaning this one day, Adam sees a car careening out of control and stops time to prevent an accident. The drunk driver he saves turns out to be Dr. Aubrey, a scientist who's been demeaned in the press, but holds important information that can prevent mounting tremors around the globe from becoming catastrophic. From this encounter on, Adam begins using his gift constructively to help his new friend get his message across. Because there are greedy forces influencing the government, unwilling to accept Dr. Aubrey's theories, both Adam and he come into great danger as the tremors get worse and worse. With Brenda's help, and that of a well-intentioned FBI agent, a plan by Adam utilizing music to save the day is able to come to fruition. By story's end, Brenda has come to see Adam in a new light - other than as the socially backward carpenter she's previously viewed him as. He no longer has to worry about winning her affection.
