The Lodger: Suspicion Lives Upstairs

By v. m.

When a struggling London couple finally finds a lodger, his money feels like rescue. Then the Avenger murders continue-and Ellen Bunting begins to notice how often the strange man living upstairs seems to echo the clues appearing outside her door.

The Lodger is a psychological thriller built on intimate paranoia: a mysterious guest, a landlady who cannot decide whether her suspicion is reason or fear, and a household whose financial survival depends on the very man she has begun to dread.

As newspaper reports multiply and police theories draw closer, small details become impossible for Ellen to ignore-late-night absences, a leather bag, sovereigns spent too freely, red ink, locked-away possessions, and Mr. Sleuth's disturbing fascination with biblical passages about sin and judgment. What began as relief slowly becomes domestic suspense, with danger no longer somewhere in London but possibly living one floor above.

Part domestic psychological thriller and part psychological suspense, the story turns poverty, secrecy, trust, and proximity into its central pressure. Ellen's problem is not simply whether her lodger is dangerous. It is what she will do if believing the worst means destroying the security that saved her household from ruin.

This rewritten public-domain adaptation of Marie Belloc Lowndes's The Lodger preserves the original characters, London setting, Avenger murder plot, and central uncertainty while reshaping the prose through a more immediate, immersive psychological lens.

For readers drawn to London psychological thrillers, serial-killer suspense, dangerous strangers inside ordinary homes, moral uncertainty, and classic crime fiction viewed through a closer psychological perspective
