In the dark and cold basement of northern Minnesota, 9-year-old Becky finds herself trapped by her mean and drunk father, Henry. Lonely and scared, Becky befriends the mice that inhabit the basement, naming them and creating a little town with them as residents. As days pass, hunger gnaws at her, leading her to a dark and heartbreaking decision - she begins to eat the mice that were once her friends, all the while crying in despair.
