The Legend of Mammy Jane, is in my top 10 of books I recommend others to read.

The Legend of Mammy Jane, is one of my top 10 books. This is a book of overcoming adversity and a book about the power of hard work. Mammy Jane did what it took to provide for her family and more! She took advantage of every blessing and turned misfortune into a little fortune. Mammy Jane is a women of strength and will power. Well written book, Piskche writes in away of allowing the reader to understand the language and feel the hardship.

A super book!!

I have read this at least three times and I find more to love each time I read it. I like to read about the every day things that Mammy Jane and her family dealt with as well as the hardships. I read the book when things in my life seem really difficult. I have it so easy compared to Mammy Jane. Mammy Jane's son Nathan was my great-grandfather and I've been to all of the places mentioned in the book, I knew my grandmother was a special lady but it makes me feel so close to her to know her history, and so proud to have such a family history for myself and my children. I will make sure they read the book, even though I've related much of it to them already, and I hope to pass on an appreciation for those who have gone before us, life was so hard for them yet they kept going and managed to make something of themselves. I also hope that maybe my own journal writing will give my decendants an idea of what life was like in my life time. If you are a history buff or like stories about real people, with real problems and real difficulties then this will keep you in the armchair from beginning to end.

A Hidden Treasure of Literature

My mother passed this novel to me several years ago. It was a local favorite in rural West Virginia and I've done my best to pass along its story to those who love to read. It's a story of triumph and a tribute to hard working family women. The main character makes her way from very humble beginnings to the head of household. The most memorable scene is the excitment of her wedding celebration--it's worth reading just for that imagery. I sat and easily read through it in only a few settings and have re-read it several times. It is a wonderfully accurate and geographically based novel. It is certainly a treasure lost in the many high name and popular authors.

The Legend of Mammy Jane

This book is about the life of my great great grandmother. I can not put into words what a thrill it is for me to have read it. Although, I realize that not all aspects of the book are factual, many are. I never had any knowledge of my ROOTS until reading this. Going to the cemetary behind the house (on the cover) and reading the names on the tomb stones and knowing who they were and how they lived and died was unbelievable. Ironically, my middle name is Jane and my mother feels that I inherited it well as she says I am much like her. I only wish that I could someday live in the house and keep the heritage alive. I highly recommend this book. Everyone who I have given the book to to read, usually finishes it in a day.

I cleaned my house from top to bottom after reading this!!!

After I cleaned everything, I started to learn to cook, sort of. Which thrilled my husband to pieces! I am from WV and i heard about this book at an Appalacian seminar. I love this book and the characters. I do wish more was discussed with what happened to some of the characters, especially the children. After they grew up and got married, they were basically done in the story. I will reread this book often and have reread it already many times. My husband loves it when I read this book because it renews my desire to be more like Mammy Jane. Though I know I could not weather the situations she did as well. I would love to be as determined, strong, and resourceful as her. I wouldn't reccommend any of Sibyl's other books and I'm still looking for a book comparable to this one. Read it, make sure you have a box of tissues close!

Legend of Mammy Jane

Having been always curious about the past times, I finally sat down and read this book. Knowing something about the past because I am from WV and even though I am not old have lived that type of life. If you want to have a good read and become more thankful about what we have now, sit down and read this real life saga about how one strong woman made a life of being poor into a well deserved properous life. It was really interesting how a very large family was content and willing to work as a family and were happy with what they have. One might come to realize how easy we do have it now days. It is a feel good book and I wanted to read more about the lives that lived on.
