THE INTERDIMENSIONAL SOUND OF NAPLES. A Documentary on Paper
This is not a history of Neapolitan music. It is an expos of how one of the most complex sonic civilizations on Earth has been reduced to a postcard, and of how it continues to survive underground, in the hands of musicians nobody books and in labs nobody funds. At the same time, it is an invitation for readers to discover and explore the Interdimensional Sound of Naples, which is still pulsing and full of vitality.
From the physicists who anticipated IRCAM to the musicians who reinvented the language, from Vesuvian rituals to electronic dub: Naples is not a museum. It is a multiverse.
Louis Siciliano doesn't write as a spectator. He has moved through this music as a musician, composer, and producer. He has seen its greatness and its misery. This book is an act of resistance. In it are James Senese, Osanna, Pino Daniele. But also the other Naples: clubs with no support, luthiers struggling to produce as the cost of living keeps rising, forgotten researchers, old music bookstores on the brink of closing, musicians playing intimate rooms because the big spotlights are aimed at the "nothing" that rages on.
Siciliano dismantles the fake machine: money that buys repetition, television that puts the spotlight before the craft, an industry that treats artists as products with expiration dates, crime that turns decay into a showcase of power.
This is not a comfortable book. It is written by someone who knows that without supply chains and without outposts, the most beautiful sound in the world can go silent without making a sound. But it is also a hymn to the Present Music of Naples, the only music that can save a city when everything else falters.
Because music is not an ornament. It is a form of knowledge of the world.
"The Interdimensional Sound of Naples begins at the point where sound stops being merely sound and becomes a form of knowledge of the world."
