I'm quite a fan of dictionaries of symbols. Of course if you're interested in the best one, you should get Chevalier's and Cirlot's. Biedermann is quite complete, but inferior if compared to the other two. The Herder Dictionary of Symbols is a very small dictionary, but it's a good compilation. It has a wide selection of illustrations, which is imperative for the study of symbols, and it even surprises every now and then with a few symbols that you won't find on the other dictionaries. I bought it because I found it in Biedermann's bibliography, and I'm not disappointed.
